A Brazilian Rabbi and American citizen, who was in my mother’s class at RAMAZ, Rabbi Sobel is president of the largest congregation in Latin America in Sao Paolo, Brazil. In March 2007, he was arrested in Palm Beach for shoplifting $680 worth of neckties. His doctors said he suffered from mood disorders and had been taking large amount of drugs to combat severe insomnia.
Shande: Obviously a spiritual relative of Winona Ryder, why expensive neckties of all things and in Palm Beach of all places? Did he get jealous of the American Jews he was dining with at the Breakers? For a foreign rabbi and one president of such a community there can be no excuse or justification. For a rabbi breaking one of the Ten Commandments, what a place to start.
