He went from being a Russian translator and bricklayer in France and then went into import-export where he has amassed a fortune of $4 billion. He has purchased the Hapoel Jerusalem basketball team and Beitar Jerusalem and is President of the oldest Russian-Jewish umbrella organization. He has been recently active in Israeli politics paying for Eliat vacations for besieged Sderot residents and constructing a tent village for the homeless during the last Lebanon war. He has founded a political party “Social Justice,” and plans to run for Mayor of Jerusalem in 2008.

An American Orthodox rabbi and one-time Knesset member, Kahane founded two movements, the Jewish Defense League in the US and the Kach political party in Israel. After the Goldstein massacre the party was outlawed and Kahane was removed from the Knesset. The foundations of his movement were Greater Israel, A Jewish state within biblical borders, the expulsion of the Palestinians and a Jewish theocratic state based on the Halakha. He emigrated to Israel after the police began to investigate his involvement in a series of terrorist bombings. He was assassinated in 1990 at the New York Marriot hotel. In 2000, his son and daughter in law were were murdered on their way to their settlement home Kfar Tapuach with more than 60 machine gun rounds entering their van.

A Russian émigré, he served an advisor to Golda Meir on the Russian immigration. He moved to Africa for business and his company LIAT owned the only bus in Freetown. Shabtai vanished from London in the 1980’s but resurfaced in Israel to face trial for espionage. He was accused for being the mastermind of an African KGB station. He spent years in an Israeli prison and was then repatriated to Russia.

A Brazilian Rabbi and American citizien, who was in my mother’s class at RAMAZ, Rabbi Sobel is president of the largest congregation in Latin America in Sao Paolo, Brazil. In March 2007, he was arrested in Palm Beach for shoplifting $680 worth of neckties. Lev Davidovich Bronstein, another Russian Revolutionary Ukrainian Jew, though second only to Lenin, he founded the Red Army and served as Commissar for War and Foreign Affairs. He successfully extracted Russia from war with Germany and subdued the Whites in the Civil War and the invading Allies just after the revolution. By the 1920’s he was expelled and deported from the Soviet Union. A noted writer and philosopher he developed ideas faithful to Leninism but alternative to Stalinism based around permanant revolution and the fourth revolution. A Cosmopolitan Jew who had lived in Odessa, Istanbul, Vienna, New York, it was in Mexico City at the parental home of Frieda Kahlo (with whom he was having an affair) that a gardener with an ice pick paid off by Stalin ended his life.

A Ukrainian village Jew, he was a communist years before the revolution. He was commissar of propaganda in the Red Army during the revolution and went on to subdue Muslims in the Central Asian republics. By 1922 he was Stalin’s right hand man, filled the beurocracy with Stalinists and had no known opinions of his own. After a brief period in charge of the Ukraine, in 1928 he became Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party. He oversaw the construction of the Moscow Metro and the destruction of many of the city’s oldest monuments. He lived to see his protégé Khrushchev take over while he became an aging pensioner and devoted grandfather, surviving until the age of 97.

Henrich Ha-Levi of Trier was the son of Herschl Mordechai descendend from a long ling of rabbis in the Rhineland heartland of Ashekanzic Jewry. A New Jersey Jew and son of a school teacher and a communist party member, Ginsberg was ejected from Columbia university after being caught in bed with star football player Jack Kerouac. Shortly thereafter he had an auditory hallucination of the works of William Blake which set him on a path to become the leading light of 1950’s Beat poetry. His mentor William Carlos Williams introduced him to the San Francisco scene where Ginsberg unveiled his most famous work “Howl,” the subject of an obscenity law suit.
